Next club meeting will be August 3rd 2010.

Minutes from the July 6th, 2010 Club Meeting

July 6, 2010

The Southern Utah Rock Club meeting was called to order by President Lynn Dalton, who turned the meeting over to Rafael Arteaga, as Rafael was busy setting up for the Renaissance Faire an was not able to stay for the entire meeting. Rafael presented information on a door prize. Everyone attending tonight’s meeting was given a free raffle ticket for several special prizes and also received a free ticket for every $10.00 spent on regular raffle tickets.

We would like to thank Lost Trail Minerals and the City Café and Deli for their generous donations to the special raffle.

Rafael also informed us that Bill Lemon, from the Nevada Rock Club, will be bringing their group up to camp overnight at Yankee Meadows to collect blue agate on July 17th. Our club has been invited to join them and will meet them in the Smith’s parking lot at between 10:00 and 10:30, again on July 17th, which is a Saturday. You may also have an opportunity to meet at Yankee Meadows on Sunday as they will probably be collecting then too or will be able to direct you to the collection site. On Saturday, the group will also stop in Summit to collect agate.

A trip to the Apex mine for azurite, malachite, gallium and thallium is in the planning stages and the exact date and details will be announced.

Since September is the Club’s anniversary we might want to plan another trip to Delta. It will be a three day event and members only. We will have to contact Rafael for camping or hotel arrangements.

Thank you Rafael as always for your time and talent.

Lynn introduced those who brought friends, or relatives, to the meeting as guests. Ron Morrow brought his son-in-law, Juan Moreno and grandsons Michael and Jeremy Moreno as well as friend Bill Woodie from Hemet, California. Joel Haslem brought his cousin Myrna who is visiting from Las Vegas. Joe Jensen brought his friend, Richard Parker and grandson. We are glad you came and hope you enjoyed the meeting. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to new members Sheril Laukaitis and George and Emeteria Lay, we look forward to getting to know you better.

Thank you to Steve Wise, Aly Pedersen and Dave Crosby for donating their treasures and to Joel Haslem and Margaret Malm for making your treasures available.

Old Business

Again, membership dues will be pro-rated to February, when all memberships will expire. The memberships are $18.00 for an individual and $27.00 for families. Please see our treasurer, Ruth Miller to keep your membership current.

Insurance

Because it was ascertained that the Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies could not provide liability coverage for our members, we will be joining the Rocky Mountain Federation.

June Outing

A big round of applause to Aly Pedersen who led the group on a very successful outing. A card was passed around and signed by those who were able to participate and will be sent to the mine owners. Hope to make that trip again sometime.

Show and Tell

While some people brought rocks to show & swap, I’m not sure how much was swapping was accomplished.

Thank you to Ron Morrow for showing some of your finds from the last outing. Thank you also to Steve Wise, Joe Jensen, Lynn Dalton aka “The Jasper Guy”, Rick Conley, aka “Mr. Picasso stone man”, Aly Pederson and Julie Powell for information about the rocks you brought, and to George Lay for the photos you shared. Sandy Whitewinds brought a black light and showed us how the rocks fluoresced while Aly Pedersen explained the process. Dave Crosby brought some templates to demonstrate how to mark your slabbed stones so you can cut them where you want.

Thank you all again for sharing and making the meeting more interesting and informative.

New Business

Dave Crosby is the new Webmaster for the Southern Utah Rock Club and gave a very informative demonstration on just how to navigate the forum he has set up as a link from our web page. Don’t forget that on the website you can request what types of rocks you would like to collect and we can all vote to see if that is where we want to go for an outing.

A big thank you for the refreshments goes to Steve and Debbie Nollan and Carol Wadsack.

Treasurers Report

Ruth Miller reported a little over $200.00 was raised from the raffle and sale of rocks. Our current balance is over $2200.00. Thanks to those of you who purchased raffle tickets and memberships.

Theron Roberts was instructed by his daughter to win something for her so luckily he won several items and she can have her choice (if not all of them Theron?). The Moreno boys, Michael and Jeremy were big winners of the free raffle and are now the proud owners of two new water bottles (with a little help from Grandpa Ron). Steve Nollan was a big winner. It pays to buy those tickets, huh Steve! And, Carol Wadsack walked off with a treasure, although I can’t remember the name of the rock she won. We did have some horse trading of some of the raffled items afterwards and I think everyone was pleased with their trades.

Looking forward to more fun and facts next month ~

BUSINESS

The club has voted to get permanent name tags for paid members. If you or someone you know can help with this let me know.

Dave Crosby gave a great presentation on the genesis of Thunder Eggs.

Steve Wise did some research on a location for fossils in Black Rock, Arizona and brought back some nice specimens. He has also asked if the club would be interested in using a shed on a rental of his, for the rock club shop. Some work would need to be done, electrical and plumbing. Feedback on this idea would be appreciated.

A vote will be taken in December on the club newsletter name and a logo/mascot. Please forward your ideas.

Several of our members brought in some very nice finds and creations.

The suggestion of the club recycling to help raise additional funds was brought up. If you would like to volunteer to be our official Recycler, contact me.

For those that have not been able to attend for some time, the club has started acquiring lapidary equipment. Our first official purchase was a faceting machine along will several other small lapidary units, books, laps, blades and much more. I will try to have an itemized list shortly for all to inspect. If any of you are experienced faceters and would be willing to teach lessons please let me know. I also encourage members to be on the lookout for more used lapidary equipment that the club may be interested. Please forward to rafael@southernutahrockclub.com.

Next Meeting will be December 1 at 6pm at the Cedar City Library. A reminder to all elected and appointed officers a BOD meeting will be held at 5:30 pm on the same day. If anyone in the club has any issues, suggestions or ideas which you think should be addressed during the board meeting please plan to attend the 6pm meeting or email me your thoughts.

If I have forgotten someone to thank or forgot to address any issue, let me know.

Sincerely

Rafael Arteaga
